Why we built EmojisLab

The emoji site that actually gets it.

We were tired of looking up an emoji and getting a dry, Unicode-Consortium-approved definition that completely missed the point.

You search “🥺” and the top result tells you it's the “Pleading Face emoji, depicting a face with furrowed brows and large, glossy eyes.” Cool. But that doesn't explain why your boyfriend just sent it followed by “👉👈” at 11:30pm, or why your group chat reacted to your news with 17 of them in a row.

We text in emojis daily. Our friends ask us what stuff means. We've been the unofficial group chat translator for the better part of a decade. We built the emoji resource we wished existed — one that tells you what an emoji actually does in the wild, not what a committee in 2010 decided it should mean.

“An emoji's meaning is whatever the internet has agreed to do with it this week.”

That's the framing. Unicode names the glyph. Culture writes the dictionary. We just write it down, ship it fast, and update it when the meaning shifts — which it does, constantly. The 💀 of 2018 is not the 💀 of 2024, and pretending otherwise is the same energy as your dad putting “haha” at the end of every text.

⊹ Our promise

Three things we'll never compromise on

01

Honest meanings, not textbook ones

We explain how an emoji is actually used right now — including the ironic uses, the platform-specific connotations, and the meanings your iPhone's emoji description will never tell you.

02

Real data over guesses

Our trending rankings come from anonymous copy events across our site and integrations — not from someone's gut feeling about what's hot.

03

Free forever. No signup.

No paywalls, no premium tier, no email harvesting. Ads pay for the servers. You get the meanings.

⊹ Methodology

How we decode an emoji

01

Unicode source

Start with the official Unicode CLDR name, codepoint, and category. Every emoji has a paper trail.

02

Cultural research

Comb TikTok, Twitter, Reddit, and DM screenshots from our network. What are people actually doing with this?

03

"From a guy / girl" analysis

Read DM logs, Reddit r/relationships posts, and survey our editorial team to decode subtextual meanings.

04

Live usage tracking

Anonymous copy events update trending scores every hour. Meanings get revised when usage shifts.
