Animal emojis split into two roughly-equal groups: the face emojis (cat face, dog face, bear face) and the full-body emojis (cat, dog, lion). The face versions are friendlier and more cartoonish — they’re the ones used in pet content, kid-friendly posts, and anything that’s going for cute. The full-body emojis read as more neutral, more zoological — useful for wildlife posts and adult animal lovers.
Cats and dogs
The dog face 🐶 is one of the most-used animal emojis on Instagram. It’s the standard pet-content emoji — paired with photos of actual dogs, used for “puppy eyes” texts, and traded between owners describing their pets. The full-body dog 🐕 reads more practical — a service dog, a working dog, or just a more neutral reference.
The cat face 🐱 has a similar relationship with the full-body cat 🐈. The black cat 🐈⬛ got its own emoji in Unicode 13 (2020), partly to give Halloween posts a dedicated symbol and partly to recognise that black cats are a meaningful category for cat owners.
Wildlife favourites
The fox 🦊 is one of the most popular wildlife emojis, partly because of its association with “clever” and partly because it’s just a well-designed character on most platforms. Bear face 🐻 and panda face 🐼 are paired in the same way as cats and dogs — the face design makes them feel like friends rather than wild animals.
The lion 🦁 is the big-cat representative; it carries connotations of power, courage, and astrology (Leo). Rabbit face 🐰 is Easter-coded but works year-round for cute and quick-moving things.
The flying set
The butterfly 🦋 is one of the highest-trending animal emojis on the platform, used for transformation themes, beauty content, and gentle aesthetics. Honeybee 🐝 works literally (gardening, environmental posts) and figuratively (“queen bee” energy, “busy as a bee”).
And finally the unicorn 🦄 — technically not a real animal, but it lives in this category and earns its place. It signals magic, rarity, and a particular brand of joyful aesthetic that has come and gone in waves since around 2016. Frog face 🐸, meanwhile, has its own internet history — it lived through years of meme association and now reads as more wholesome again.
