⊹ Editorial

Sadness in text is hard. You can’t see a face, you can’t hear a tone. A “yeah” can mean fine, can mean exhausted, can mean angry. Crying emojis are how people compensate — they put the missing emotional information back into the message.

The intensity scale

It helps to think of the crying emojis as a scale rather than a list. At the gentle end, the worried face 😟 and slightly frowning face 🙁 register mild concern without dramatising it. The disappointed face 😞 is one step further — it’s the “oh” of bad news, like finding out the restaurant is closed.

In the middle sits the pleading face 🥺, which technically isn’t crying but is on the edge of it. The big eyes, slightly trembling. It’s the universal “please” emoji and also the universal “I’m about to lose it” emoji. Closely related is the newer face holding back tears 🥹 — the one you send when something is unexpectedly moving, like watching a proposal video.

The crying face 😢 is one quiet tear. It reads as genuinely sad. The loudly crying face 😭 turns the volume up — both tears flowing, mouth open. But here’s the trick: 😭 is now used almost as often for overwhelming positive emotion (“this is too cute, I can’t”) as for actual sadness. Context tells you which.

Tired vs sad — they’re different

The tired face 😫 and weary face 😩 look similar but mean different things. Tired is exhaustion — “I have so much to do.” Weary is more dramatic — “I cannot deal with this anymore.” Both work for venting about a long week, but weary skews younger and more theatrical.

The broken heart 💔 isn’t a face, but it belongs here. It’s the heartbreak emoji — used literally for breakups and figuratively for any deep disappointment (your team losing, a favourite show ending, a friend moving away).

What to send when

For mild bad news, 🙁 or 😟. For something that genuinely hurts, 😭 or 💔. For “this is too much”: 🥺. For “this is too cute”: also 🥺 or 😭. The same emoji can carry opposite emotions depending on what surrounds it — which is what makes texting hard and what makes the sad-face cluster so widely used.
